Higher Education Commission (HEC) and National University of Sciences and Technology
(NUST) on Saturday, 11th July, organized the 5th National
Engineering Robotics Contest (NERC) 2009 at the college of Electrical and Mechanical
Engineering (EME). Executive Director HEC, Dr. Sohail H. Naqvi was the Chief Guest.
The event was divided into two main phases – heats and finals. Heats were held on
10th July from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM. Over 105 robots from 35 institutions
of Pakistan participated in the NERC heats in their endeavor to qualify for the
finals. Pakistan's leading universities like CASE, NUST, GIKI, FAST NU, UET Lahore,
UET Peshawar , UET Taxila, IIUI Islamabad and NED Karachi were participating in
the event. Centre for Advanced Studies in Engineering (CASE) participated in the
competition for the first time with 8 teams. 6 teams qualified for the finals on
11th amongst other 24 teams.
Audience had the opportunity to see the most exciting final in the history of NERC.
CASE and EME had the best robots in the arena. BURAQ from CASE and NEO from EME
were ranked the hot favourite to win the competition but both missed out on their
first try. After a very close competition, CHALLENGER from CASE was announced the
champion team of NERC 2009 and was rewarded with a prize money of Rs. 80,000/-.
SYLAR from EME won the 2nd position with the prize money of Rs. 50,000/-.
GLADIATOR from CASE won the 3rd position with a prize money of Rs. 40,000/-.
T-BOB from CASE added colors to the honor list by winning the "best engineering
design" award and cash prize of Rs. 30,000/-.
From this win CASE has achieved another milestone in its journey towards becoming
