Gen Khalid was commissioned in the Corps of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering of the Pakistan Army in 1970 after gaining his bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering in 1969. Up to the rank of a field officer he worked in inspection, repair and maintenance workshops for vehicles and equipment, besides a 3 year instructional assignment at the College of EME. During his mid- career he was employed in aviation engineering units responsible for inspection, repair and maintenance of aircraft/ helicopters and associated ground support equipment.His services were then seconded to the Qatar Emiri Armed Forces for a period of 3 years as Advisor Maintenance for formulating policies , procedures and instructions on the inspection, repair and maintenance of vehicles, weapons and equipment of the army. On return , he did another 3 year term at the College of E & ME as a staff officer, the Deputy Commandant and Chief Instructor of all the academic (NUST) and military engineering wings of the college. On promotion he was appointed as the Chief Inspector Armaments and gained valuable experience in the inspection and technical development of weapons and ammunition. To further add to his teaching experience he was posted as an instructor at the National Defense College, a unique distinction of being the first EME officer ever to be posted to NDC. On elevation to the next rank, he was made responsible for a strategic system’s development agency where he remained in charge for 4 years and 2 months. Finally completed his professional career with a 3 year stint as a member of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission in July 2009. In recognition of his services he has been conferred the awards of Hilal-e-Imtiaz (Military) and Sitara-i- Imtiaz (Military).
