Ph.D. in Controls and Computer Sciences from Institute National des Sciences Appliquées (INSA) Toulouse, France in 1998
M.S. from Université de Franche Comté, Besanc¸ France in 1994
B.S. from NED University of Engineering and Technology Karachi in 1989

Work Experience

He worked in Technical University of Denmark (DTU) during 1999–2000 as Research Assistant Professor. There, he supervised CAD for MEMS project funded by Denmark Technical Research Council. From 2000 to 2006, he worked in CMC Mcirosystems in Canada as Senior Staff Scientist in Microsystem Engineering. His main responsibility was to provide design, fabrication and test services through fabless design manufacturing network to Canadian universities in the area of MEMS and Microfluidics. He served as a Visiting Professor, Department of Electrical Engineering, University of Waterloo, Canada from 2003-2006.

In July 2006, he joined Ghulam Ishaq Khan Institute of Engineering Sciences and Technology as Foreign Professor under Higher Education of Pakistan’s (HEC) program of Foreign Faculty Hiring Program. He has received numerous research grants (total of Rs. 20 Millions) from HEC and National ICT Fund to establish research in the area of MEMS. Presently, he is heading the Department of Computing in CASE and his research group is involved in the development of MEMS based microgrippers for biomedical applications, micro gyroscope and 3-axis accelerometers.

Research Grants Received
  1. Rs 13 Millions, National ICT Fund, Project Title: Development of a Net Enabled Retinal Image Analysis and Screening System for Grading and Diagnosis of Diabetic Retinopathy and its Integration in i-telemedicine system, 2013.
    The proposed system is a telemedicine system for tele-screening of Diabetic retinopathy (DR) with capabilities of self diagnosis, real time access to data from rural areas, assignment of ophthalmologist for expert opinion and management of a national database for regular monitoring. The system will be a low cost and easy access solution to patients with diabetes for regular monitoring of the retina to avoid the risk of sudden vision loss. In this project, we propose a self diagnosis system for DR with capabilities of automated screening and diagnosis of abnormalities present in human retina, a universal communication node to provide real time availability of data and intelligent server to assign expert and schedule patient’s data and help in early detection of DR to save patient’s vision.

    This project plans and envisions sufficient design work on various MEMS and VLSI devices and will also be able to offer such design services to Pakistani Univesities and international customers in next 2-3 years after creating enough skilled manpower inside Pakistan in this area. This web-based Open Source libraries will include MEMS/VLSI chip design projected accomplished at GIKI and other Pakistani universities to show case their work in front of the international community while sharing all design knowledge.
